You get home. It’s three degrees outside. You press the button on your Vaillant boiler. Nothing. Or worse—a flashing error code.
At this point, you’re probably thinking about calling an engineer. And sometimes, you should. But from my experience handling emergency callouts for heating issues (and I’ve lost count of how many I’ve done just this winter alone), about half of the problems are things you can fix yourself in 10 minutes. The other half need a pro, but knowing the difference saves you money, time, and the shame of paying a £90 call-out fee for what turned out to be a flipped switch.

1. The Boiler Is Off Completely: Check These First
Sounds obvious. You’d be surprised. In March last year, I got an emergency call at 6 AM from a customer who hadn’t had heat for two days. “The boiler’s dead,” he said. I drove 40 minutes. It was switched off at the mains. The plug had been accidentally knocked.
Before you do anything else:
- Is there power at the boiler? Check the mains switch (usually a fused spur nearby).
- Has the timer or programmer been set correctly? Check if it’s been put on ‘holiday mode’ or ‘off’ by accident.
- Check your thermostat. If it’s a wireless model, are the batteries dead? This happens more than you’d think.
If everything has power and the display is still dark, you’ve likely blown a fuse or a PCB issue. That’s a pro job.
2. Vaillant Boiler Error Codes: The Big Three
Vaillant boilers are good at telling you what’s wrong—if you know what the code means. In Q3 2024 alone, I attended 47 boiler callouts where the customer had the error code on display but didn’t know what to do. Here are the three you’re most likely to see:
F.22 (No Water / Low Pressure)
This is the most common Vaillant boiler error code. Your system pressure has dropped below 1 bar. Why? Usually a leak somewhere, or it just needs topping up.
Fix: Check the pressure gauge. If it’s below 1 bar, you need to re-pressurize the system using the filling loop. There’s a handle underneath the boiler—turn it slowly. Watch the gauge. Stop at 1.5 bar. If you lose pressure again within a week, you’ve got a leak. Get a pro.
F.28 / F.29 (Ignition Failure)
The boiler can’t light. This is usually a gas supply issue or a blocked condensate pipe.
Check: Is the gas supply on? Did another appliance (like a gas hob) stop working? If gas is fine, the most likely culprit is a frozen or blocked condensate pipe—especially in winter.
Fix for frozen pipe: Locate the white plastic pipe coming from the boiler. If it’s frozen, gently warm it with a hot water bottle or a hair dryer. Do not use boiling water. That’s a classic mistake that can crack the pipe.
F.75 (Pump Fault / Blocked System)
The control board thinks the pump has failed. Sometimes it’s the pump itself. Sometimes it’s sludged up radiators restricting flow.
What to do: Try resetting the boiler. If it comes back within hours, you’re looking at a partial blockage. You can try bleeding the radiators (see Step 6), but if the system is old and sludgy, you’ll need a power flush. That’s a specialist job.
I should add: not all error codes are equally urgent. F.22 you can fix yourself. F.75? You’re probably calling someone.
3. Thermostat Replacement: The Overlooked Culprit
People assume a broken boiler when the house is cold. But sometimes the boiler is fine. The thermostat just gave up.
I had one last month. Family said the boiler was cycling on and off constantly. They’d already ordered a new boiler part—£300. I walked in, put a new battery in the wireless thermostat. Problem solved. The old one was reading 18°C when the room was actually 22°C. Simple.
Before replacing a thermostat:
- Check the batteries. Wireless thermostats eat them.
- Check if the thermostat is communicating with the boiler. Some have a ‘link’ test. Consult your manual.
- If it’s wired, check if the receiver box at the boiler is blinking correctly.
If you do need to replace it (should mention: this is something you can often do yourself if you’re comfortable with basic wiring), Vaillant sells direct replacements. Turn off the power at the fuse spur first. Period. Not worth the risk.
4. Solenoid Valve Issues: The Water Pressure Regulation Problem
Your Vaillant boiler uses a solenoid valve to control water flow, especially in combination boilers for hot water. When it goes bad, you get:
- No hot water, but heating works.
- Hot water runs cold intermittently.
- Strange clicking noises from the boiler.
The reality check: From the outside, it looks like a simple part. The reality is Vaillant solenoid valves are often integrated with the hydraulic block, and replacing them requires partial draining of the system. This isn’t a DIY job unless you really know what you’re doing. I’ve seen people try—they ended up flooding their kitchen.
If you suspect a solenoid valve issue, call a Gas Safe registered engineer. It’s usually a £150-250 repair. Cheaper than ruining your floorboards.
5. The Boiler Is Running But No Heat: Bleed Your Radiators
You’ll know it’s time to bleed them when:
- Your radiators are cold at the top but hot at the bottom.
- They make gurgling or clicking sounds.
- Your boiler pressure keeps dropping after you top it up.
How to bleed a radiator (the right way):
- Turn the heating on. Let it run for 10 minutes so the system pressure distributes water.
- Turn it off. Do not bleed radiators while the system is hot—you’ll get scalded.
- Find the bleed valve (the square brass or plastic pin at the top of the radiator).
- Use a radiator key (or a flathead screwdriver for newer models) to slowly turn the valve anti-clockwise.
- You’ll hear a hiss. That’s air escaping. Wait until water starts to trickle out—then close the valve immediately.
- Check your boiler pressure. It will have dropped. Re-pressurize to 1.5 bar (see Error F.22 above).
Common mistake people make: They bleed all the radiators in the house, then wonder why they’ve lost all pressure. Bleed the one that needs it. Not all of them.
6. Flue Blockage: The One You Shouldn’t Touch
Here’s one where I have to give you the hard truth. If your boiler is showing an F.71 or F.72 error code (air pressure switch fault), it might be a flue issue. A bird’s nest, debris, or ice can block the flue.
Do not touch the flue. I mean it. Not your job.
The flue is the exhaust pipe. If it’s blocked, your boiler can push carbon monoxide back into the house. You can’t see it, you can’t smell it. But you can die from it.
I tell every customer the same thing: if you suspect a flue issue, shut the boiler off, call an engineer. We’ll check it with a flue gas analyzer. That’s the only safe way.
The vendor who cares about your safety will tell you what not to touch. That’s me, right now.
7. When It’s Just Old Age: The Hard Conversation
My boiler at home is 14 years old. It’s a Vaillant. Reliable. But parts are getting harder to find, and the efficiency is nowhere near modern condensing boilers.
If yours is over 12 years old and you’ve had 3+ callouts in the last year, you’re not solving a problem anymore. You’re renting one. The money you spend on repairs is better spent on a replacement.
This was true 10 years ago when modern condensing boilers were becoming the norm. Today, with heat pumps and hybrid systems on the horizon, the calculation is different. But if you need heat now, a new Vaillant Ecotec or A-rated boiler will pay for itself in efficiency savings over 3-5 years. At least, that’s been my experience with most homes I’ve visited.
Final Advice: Know the Difference Between a DIY Fix and a Pro Job
I’ve seen families go cold for a week because they thought everything was an emergency. And I’ve seen people flooded kitchens because they thought everything was a DIY job. The truth—and I don’t always get this right—is in the middle.
You can fix:
- F.22 error code (low pressure / re-pressurize)
- Frozen condensate pipe (gentle thawing)
- Dead thermostat batteries
- Air in radiators (bleeding)
Call a pro for:
- Any flue-related error codes
- Solenoid valve replacement
- F.75 error codes (pump / blockage)
- Gas supply problems
- If you’ve tried everything and it’s still broken
Hit ‘confirm’ on that call to an engineer? Maybe. But at least you’ll know whether you’ve really tried everything first.
