The correct answer is often not a reset at all—it's charging the battery above freezing, checking the trigger switch, or clearing the chute sensor. If you force a restart while the battery is cold and discharged, the BMS will keep the machine dead. That's not a failure; that's the protection doing its job.

Step 5: Write the callback notes before you leave the driveway

It took me five years and about 50 callbacks to understand that most "technical failures" were actually decision failures. The cheap filter was a decision. The wrong wiring diagram was a decision. The 40kW boiler without a buffer was a decision. People think cheap parts save money because of the upfront price. Actually, the upfront price is only part of the cost—the callback, the redo, and the customer's lost trust are the rest.

So make a note on every service order: what you replaced, what you measured, and what you'd do differently next time. The last line is the one that gets skipped. If you don't write it down, you'll make the same mistake in six months and call it experience. Not a glamorous habit. But it's the one that saves the most money.

Common errors I still catch myself making

  • Not taking a photo before removing wires.
  • Ordering filters by size instead of construction quality.
  • Assuming every Honeywell thermostat resets the same way.
  • Forgetting the water side volume when stepping up to a 40kW boiler.
  • Thinking "expensive" and "good" are the same thing. They're not. The goal is the right part at a fair price, installed with the right process.

Oh, and one more: leave the thermostat alone until you've checked the filter and the condensate trap. A dirty filter causes more "thermostat problems" than any reset process.
